# Where your data lives

> You choose the hosting provider and the country of each cluster. What that means for the applicable law, and what never leaves it.

## You choose the country

When you create a cluster, you choose the hosting provider and the region. Your services, their databases and their volumes run on that region's machines. This choice doesn't change without you: to move, you create another cluster.

- **Where may your data go?**: **European Union** shows only EU regions.
- Regions outside the European Union are flagged “outside EU” throughout the console.

## European hosting providers

Fransys relies on European hosting providers: Hetzner, Scaleway and Outscale (OVHcloud coming soon), with regions in France, Germany, Finland and Poland. The up-to-date list of regions shows when you create a cluster. See [Providers and regions](https://docs.fransys.cloud/en/reference/fournisseurs-et-regions/).

## Why it matters

- **Applicable law**: providers under European law, in European data centres. US providers are subject to the Cloud Act, which lets US authorities request data stored by US companies, even in Europe.
- **Your obligations**: health, finance, public sector: data location is often a legal requirement. See [Compliance](https://docs.fransys.cloud/en/securite/conformite/).
- **Latency**: servers close to your European users respond faster.

## On your own account

With [your cloud account](https://docs.fransys.cloud/en/clusters/compte-cloud/), the machines run on your account at the hosting provider: the contract and the bill for the machines are yours.
